ad astra per aspera. a rough road leads to the stars

art

Pythagoras said, “a thought is an idea in transit”. Mine travels in written words, in metaphors and poetry, in excerpts from books and quotable lines, in letters and text messages, in opinion pieces and rants. It’s a crazy world after all. So, for my sanity’s sake, I art. Here are some of my favorite words and art, born and found out of wonders and wanders and of moments of musings. More of art here.

It’s easy to be brave from a safe distance.

Van Gogh. The Starry Night.
“Sometimes when I look at you, I feel I’m gazing at a distant star.
It’s dazzling, but the light is from tens of thousands of years ago.
Maybe the star doesn’t even exist any more.
Yet sometimes that light seems more real to me than anything.”

“We had loved people we really shouldn’t and then married other people in order to forget our impossible loves, or we had once called out hello into the cauldron of the world and then run away before anyone could respond.”

“Art is not a mirror held up to reality but a hammer with which to shape it.”

An Ode to Inessa

“I could cope without your kisses if only I could see you…
to talk with you sometimes would be such a joy
and this could not cause pain to anyone.
Why deprive me of that?”

temptress

There is no greater love
for her than yours
and I am left ignored
and defeated
for I could never compete with her
and her children-
the workers and all their toils.
1997. From Swannie. Sa panahong nasa gitna ng Malamig at Kalayaan.

“He was silent for thirty seconds, maybe a minute. I uncrossed my legs under the table and wondered if this was the right moment to leave.

It was as if my whole life revolved around trying to judge the right point in a conversation to say goodbye.”

I am always in a state of constant departure while always arriving.
